The CMS Fee Schedule in the last coupld of years has added reimbursement for screening as well as for coordination of services to address the Social Determinants of Health.Commercial payers are beginning to acknowledge that regardless of proper medical attention and prescribed treatment, circumstances in a patient’s life outside thecontrol of the physician and the patient heavily influence a patient’s health and wellbeing. And evaluating your patient for these issues can affect E&M level selection.Codes to indicate these harmful situations, whether environmental or economic or otherwise, allow for reporting of treatment failures, unexpected negative outcomes, and generally increased risk in patients who may have socioeconomic reasons for less than expected positive outcomes and higher cost. Attention will be given to: Introduction and overview of social determinants Attention to codes currently available for reporting Influence on E&M level selection Available Screens Local Resources for patient assistance
